By establishing butterfly gardens, it is possible to gain insight into the life history, behaviour and role of butterflies in sustaining natural ecosystems. Information about the life history patterns, a host range and habitat association of various butterflies is essential before designing the garden. Since most of the butterfly host plants are confined to natural patches of vegetation; by conserving these habitats, we indirectly conserve various native plants and several organisms surviving on these plants.
The aims of this study were:
1) To assess the diversity of butterflies and their host plants.
2) To enrich a specific area with butterfly-friendly species.
3)To reassess the diversity of butterflies after the enrichment.
This study was conducted by Miss Sharmila of B.Sc. Forestry, Forestry College, Sirsi, under the guidance of our organisation seniors Dr. Harsha Hegde and Mr. Balachandra Sayimane. Through this research, we successfully documented various butterfly host plants that were already present in that area and planted various host plants that were new to that area. Finally, we documented the diversity of butterflies at different stages.
