TREC team in collaboration with Life Trust and Sneha Kunja conducted a research study on Freshwater Swamps in Uttara Kannada district that are famously known as ‘Myristica Swamps’ due to abundance of Myristicaceae members, with the following objectives;

i)Mapping freshwater swamps, critical micro-corridors linking these swamps, identifying the threats.

ii)Characterizing the swamp fragments and micro-corridors for species compositions, resource use, develop an enrichment protocol for each of the micro-corridor with respect to the species, frequency and geometry of planting.

iii) Standardizing protocol for propagation of swamp species through participatory approach.

iv)Create micro-corridors through enrichment planting through participatory approach, creation of new swamp populations -habitat recovery.

v)Achieve a lasting restoration of the swamps.

vi) Data collection regarding key fauna species of Myristica swamp sites.

Through this research study, TREC, Life Trust and Sneha Kunja team recorded more than 15 RET species belonging to families such as Myristicaceae, Anacardaceae, Myrtaceae, Dipterocarpaceae, Lauraceae, and many more  from 3 swamp sites in Uttara Kannada. The team also studied their regeneration and survival rates by planting samplings at degraded barren lands in and around the swamps. The team also conducted experiments to determine soil moisture, pH, organic carbon, and macro & micro nutrients to understand the major threats for swamp deterioration and planning an effective restoration of swamps.
