In a pioneering effort to restore the ecological balance of the Western Ghats region, TREC has forged a collaborative partnership with Himalaya wellness, Snehakunja and local communities and organizations to implement large-scale forest tree planting initiatives. The Western Ghats, often referred to as the “Water Towers of South India,” are a vital ecosystem that sustains millions of lives, but they are facing unprecedented threats from deforestation, climate change, and unsustainable practices.
Through this collaboration, we aim to create a green corridor across the range, reintroducing native tree species and revitalizing degraded landscapes. By engaging with indigenous communities, we ensure that the tree-planting efforts are aligned with traditional ecological knowledge and respect local cultural practices.
The heart of our initiative lies in its multipronged approach, which combines reforestation, agroforestry, and urban greening. TREC works hand-in-hand with locals in remote villages to establish community nurseries and implement sustainable agroforestry systems, integrating trees with agricultural practices. In urban areas, we collaborate with local communities to create green spaces and promote urban forestry, enhancing biodiversity and improving air quality. This collaboration has planted over 35000 samplings in North Canara district and brought about a sense of pride and ownership in the local communities, as they see the positive impact of their efforts in their surroundings.
